What a time of bold experimentation that must have been, the transitional period between 1780 and 1820! How colorful and diverse the world of instrument making suddenly became, and how lucky we are that we can draw from this diversity!
Most likely built around 1780, this model is attributed to William Forster II (1739-1808). Here, we again see the influence of superstar violinist Wilhelm Cramer, whose name is given to the tip’s distinctive “hammerhead” form.
The bow features a prominently high frog and tip, along with a relatively narrow band of hair. When the still recognizable curvature of the original is followed, the stick of the bow becomes almost straight under tension, similar to what is seen in depictions of Paganini, for example.
